Prepare yourself for a career as a clinical psychologist. The Master of Clinical Psychology from Charles Sturt University provides a pathway both to registration as a psychologist and to endorsement in the field of clinical psychology.

Designed to support psychologists working in applied settings, this course provides specialist training so you can acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes relevant to the practice of clinical psychology - with a focus on the needs of rural and remote communities.

If you want to work for NSW Health after graduating, then you could be eligible for a Tertiary Health Study Subsidy. They help cover university fees, technology and travel expenses or other associated personal costs that pop up as you study. If successful, you could be one of 12,000 students supported with up to $12,000 when you work with NSW Health after graduating.

This course has a limited number of Commonwealth supported places (CSP) available. If you secure a CSP your fees are lower than a full fee-paying place. It also means you can apply for a HECS-HELP loan to pay for your studies and defer repayment until you earn above a certain amount.

This course is part of an articulated program of study. Articulated programs allow you to build on your study to achieve the right level of qualification for you.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements:

  • Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited four-year degree within the previous ten years with a Weighted Average Mark of no less than 75 for the fourth year of psychological studies.
  • The personal suitability to undertake professional practice as a psychologist, assessed through interview and referees' reports.
  • Eligibility for provisional registration with the Psychology Board of Australia.
  • Standard English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirements apply.

What you will study

For each 8-point subject you are enrolled in, you should expect to spend 10 to 12 hours per week working on assignments and assigned readings, tutorial assistance, individual or group research/study, forum activity, workplace learning, and attending lectures, intensive schools, or examinations. If you are studying four subjects per session, this is equivalent to a full-time job. The workload for some subjects may vary as a result of approved course design.

Intensive school

You may need to attend an online or on-campus intensive school for certain subjects in this course. These schools usually involve lectures, tutorials and practicals that will give you a deeper understanding of your subject.

Career pathways

As a graduate of the Master of Clinical Psychology, you'll be eligible to apply for recognition by the Psychology Board of Australia as a clinical psychology registrar. On completing two years of supervised experience after graduation, you'll be eligible to be registered as holding an endorsement in clinical psychology and to be a specialist clinical psychology practitioner with Medicare Australia. The course has been approved by the APS College of Clinical Psychologists. As a graduate, you will be eligible for full membership of the APS and for associate membership of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists. After completing two years of subsequent supervised experience, you'll be eligible to apply for full membership of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists. As a clinical psychologist, you could work in private practice, hospitals, universities, general medical practices, community health centres or mental health services.
