Overview

Become qualified to help meet the growing demand for mammography services and breast imaging identified by BreastScreen Australia, and provide specialist care to women with the Graduate Diploma of Mammography from Charles Sturt University. As a mammographic technologist, you'll make a real difference in the lives of women by delivering preventative screening measures and customer-centred breast care.

Build your skills in communication, primary healthcare, information sharing and health promotion. Studying this course will allow you to function in a range of BreastScreen Australia facilities from fixed screening and assessment centres to mobile and remote breast screening units and private diagnostic centres.

Please note: The first compulsory intensive school for this course is held in February 2026 at the Wagga Wagga Campus.

This course is part of an articulated program of study. Articulated programs allow you to build on your study to achieve the right level of qualification for you.

Entry requirements

Applicants are required to:

  • hold an AQF Level 7 Bachelor degree (or equivalent) in health or biomedical sciences (e.g. nursing, biomedical sciences, medicine); and
  • provide evidence of access to suitable clinical experience in mammography.

This course is not suitable for those with qualifications in diagnostic radiography.

What you will learn

For each 8-point subject you are enrolled in, you should expect to spend 10 to 12 hours per week working on assignments and assigned readings, tutorial assistance, individual or group research/study, forum activity, workplace learning, and attending lectures, intensive schools, or examinations. If you are studying four subjects per session, this is equivalent to a full-time job. The workload for some subjects may vary as a result of approved course design.

Intensive school

You may need to attend an online or on-campus intensive school for certain subjects in this course. These schools usually involve lectures, tutorials and practicals that will give you a deeper understanding of your subject.

Career pathways

A career in mammography will let you be part of a multidisciplinary team as a mammographic technologist and function in a variety of BreastScreen Australia facilities, ranging from mobile and remote breast-screening units to assessment and diagnostic centres. You'll also gain an understanding of primary healthcare; cultural awareness; sensitivity, safety and security; and equity and sociocultural aspects of care relevant to consumer-centred experiences of breast care.
