JD Law Lecturer, Monash Law School
Arie Freiberg is former Dean of the Faculty of Law at Monash University and now a JD Law School Professor at Monash University Faculty of Law
Emeritus Professor Arie Freiberg is recognised as a leading authority on sentencing issues and the criminal justice system. Professor Freiberg has played a significant role in developing sentencing policy in Victoria as well as other jurisdictions.
In an area often clouded by emotion, he is guided by the data and his deep knowledge and experience to inform the debate. He is currently the chair of the Victorian Sentencing Advisory Council, a position he has held since 2004 and the Tasmanian Sentencing Advisory Council since 2013. He is a former Dean of the Faculty of Law at Monash University and was a visiting scholar at Harvard Law School.
His expertise has led to many consultancy roles with the federal, Victorian, South Australian and Western Australian governments on sentencing matters, as well as the Australian Law Reform Commission and South African Law Reform Commission. In 2015 he consulted on sentencing issues to the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. In 2016 he was a consultant to the Queensland Department of Justice and Attorney-General on drug courts.
As part of your Monash JD studies, you have the opportunity to learn first hand from Professor Freiberg, whose decades-long commitment to fairness and reform is matched only by his passion for educating the next generation of legal minds.
