Entry Requirements

Entry to this course is very competitive and requires a recognised and accredited Bachelor of Arts degree (or Bachelor of Science degree) with at least 2A Honours in Psychology or its equivalent (for example an average Distinction level in a Bachelor of Psychology or Postgraduate/Graduate Diplomas in Psychology). Applicants will also need to supply referee reports and a personal statement that details their past accomplishments, future plans, and interests in the graduate psychology program for which they have applied as part of the admission process. Students with overseas qualifications who are accepted into the course and who wish to seek registration in Australia after graduation should ensure that their undergraduate qualifications meet the requirements of the relevant psychology registration board for equivalence to a four-year Australian degree in Psychology. Applications with qualifications obtained outside Australia must have a formal assessment completed by the Australian Psychological Society before submitting an application for study. The admission process includes both application and interview.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for entry into this course, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

Option one:

  • Currently hold general registration as a Psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia, and have held this registration for a minimum of 12 months;
    and

  • Can demonstrate current compliance with Registration Board Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements.

Option two:

  • Have completed an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited Master of Professional Psychology or equivalent program, which satisfies the APAC criteria for Level 3 professional competencies in Psychology,
    and

  • Be eligible for registration with the Psychology Board of Australia as a provisional psychologist.


Entry is competitive with limited places available. To be considered for a place within this course via either of the above options, applicants must supply:

  1. An official academic transcript;

  2. A current resume or curriculum vitae that includes employment, relevant experience, research experience and accomplishments;

  3. A one-page statement outlining expectations of the course, reasons for applying for entry and including qualities that make you a suitable applicant for clinical psychology training. Applicants who are applying on the basis of current registration and CPD should provide details of this. Please use Times New Roman, size 12 font, with double line spacing;

  4. Two references supplied via Heads of Departments and Schools of Psychology Australia (HODSPA) Psychology Reference Portal.


Shortlisted applicants will be required to attend an interview (face-to-face or via teleconferencing).


All applicants must meet the requirements outlined in CQUniversity's English Language Proficiency Requirements Policy and Procedure.
Security Requirements

Students will be required to maintain registration as a General or Provisional psychologist with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Additional security checks are included in this registration.

Students may be asked to undergo additional checks (working with children and criminal history check) to satisfy the requirements of external placement sites.
Health Requirements

Students may be asked to meet specific health requirements such as vaccination status to satisfy the requirements of external placement sites.
Students must be able to attend practicum work three days per week (for full-time students) in addition to attending classes.
Assumed Knowledge

Applicants must hold current general registration as a psychologist, and have held this registration for at least 12 months, or have completed an APAC accredited Master of Professional Psychology.

Master of Psychology overview

Master level postgraduate psychology education is excellent for psychology graduates hungry for more extensive specialist knowledge. The Master of Rehabilitation Counselling from Griffith Universityis a prime example of this specialisation, making it akin to graduate certificates and diplomas. Unlike its less-extensive cousins, the Master of Psychology and its numerous branches of specialisation often take two years if undergone full time. This opens the door to a greater number of employment opportunities in exchange.

Coursework master

Most master level psychology degrees feature coursework as the predominant measure of success, requiring students to learn a combination of practical skills and theory. Deakin University offers the Master of Psychology (Organisational), an exemplar focussed on working with cross-disciplinary teams to achieve real-world results.

Research master

There are rare cases in which a research focussed Master of Psychology program can be taken, the focus being further contributions to the field rather than practical application. Employment options

Master of Psychology graduates have as many employment options open to them as specialisations.
