In today’s world making connections and building relationships is very important for finding job opportunities and advancing in your career. That's where networking comes in handy.

The Importance of Networking – Building Connections for Career Success

Imagine you're looking for a job. You have updated your resume and cover letter and have applied for job opportunities online. Despite your efforts, after weeks of waiting you have not heard from any employers. This can be quite frustrating and disheartening.

So that’s where the power of networking comes in.

Did you know that 60-80% of jobs are not advertised in Australia?

Networking is about meeting new people and building relationships with others in your industry. These connections will help you learn about unadvertised jobs. Many job openings are filled through networking and word-of-mouth referrals, rather than traditional job advertisements.

Networking is more than just searching for a job, it's also about sharing ideas, learning from others and mutually supporting each other in our career journeys. When you network you get to meet people with different backgrounds and views from yours, and this will help you grow in your personal and work life.

At first you might not see immediate results, but over time you will see the invaluable benefits of networking, and the enduring relationships built, that can help you throughout your career.

How do you start networking?

Attend networking events

Look for events in your industry where you can meet other professionals. This could be conferences for example. Don't be afraid to start a conversation with someone that you don't know. Make sure you're prepared, and you know what to say.

On that note, have you heard of an elevator pitch?

Elevator pitch is a short summary of who you are and what you do. Imagine you find yourself into an elevator with the CEO of your dream company. You have 30 seconds to make an impression before they get off. Your pitch should be clear, showcasing your skills and what you can offer. Practise your elevator pitch beforehand so you are confident introducing yourself at networking events.

Use social media

Using professional platforms like LinkedIn is great for networking online. You can link up with people in your industry, join relevant groups and engage in discussions. You never know who you might meet and how they can assist you in your career journey.

Volunteering

This way you will meet people who have similar interests and passions as you. It will also show that you are proactive and like to get involved.

Follow - Up

When you meet someone, make sure to follow up with them. You can send them an email or connect with them on LinkedIn to keep the conversation going.

Conclusion

Networking is about being genuine. It takes time and effort to build relationships, so don’t be discouraged if it doesn't happen quickly.

Networking is essential in today's jobs market. By connecting with people in your field, you will learn about new job opportunities. Start making connections today because you never know where they might take you.
