A candidate shall:

(a) be qualified for admission (see Admission Undergraduate and Postgraduate (Coursework) Rule and Admission Undergraduate and Postgraduate (Coursework) Procedures); or

(b) hold a three-year AQF Level 7 Bachelor degree which includes a three-year sequence in Psychology accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council, completed within the last 10 years; or a three-year AQF Level 7 Bachelor degree and an AQF Level 8 Graduate Diploma degree which includes a three-year sequence in Psychology accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council, completed within the last 10 years; and have achieved a GPA of at least 6.25 in the 200/300/400-level Psychology units within the accredited Psychology sequence of units.

Please note: satisfaction of these requirements does not guarantee a place in the program as there is a quota on Psychology Honours admissions and selection is based solely on academic merit.

Entry Requirements

The postgraduate programs in Clinical Psychology are highly competitive and there are many more applicants than places available. Therefore, at Griffith there is a highly structured application process. Admission to all Clinical Psychology programs is restricted to students who are registered Psychologists or who are eligible for provisional registration with the Psychology Board of Australia. The application process involves three stages.

Stage 1: The application

All applicants are required to demonstrate their capability for training in Clinical Psychology as follows:

  • Academic Achievement/Intellectual Ability: Applicants must have completed a program in Psychology extending over four years and accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC). Preference is given to applicants who have completed an Honours degree in Psychology which involves an individual research project awarded at the level of a First or Second Class Division A. It is highly desirable that applicants will have completed courses or units that are relevant to Clinical Psychology (for example, Abnormal Psychology, Counselling Psychology or Health Psychology). The Grade Point Average in the undergraduate degree, fourth year and relevant courses will be taken into account.
  • Interpersonal and Counselling Capability: Given the interpersonal sensitivity and awareness required for effective clinical practice, successful applicants will be expected to demonstrate a high level of interpersonal skills. Furthermore, in order for the program to build on a reasonably advanced applied skill baseline, successful applicants will be expected to demonstrate at least a basic level of competence in the counselling context, evidence of warmth and empathic responding and an openness to a range of approaches. This may be demonstrated by evidence of previous counselling training and relevant volunteer or work experience.

  • Support from Referees: Two referee reports are required - one from an academic who knows your work well and a second from a professional referee who can attest to your interpersonal and counselling capabilities. Stage 2: The interview

Please note that, given the competitive nature of this program, only those applicants who have been evaluated by a panel of the clinical team as having demonstrated their suitability for training in clinical psychology (according to the above criteria and ranked sufficiently high enough relative to others) will be shortlisted for an interview.

The interview itself consists of a multi-station assessment process. Applicants are required to attend a face-to-face session that takes around half a day to complete. Applicants will be required to demonstrate sound interpersonal and emotion management skills as they respond to the various tasks at each station. Tasks include, for example, responding to an ethical dilemma, roleplaying an interview, roleplaying a supervision session, discussing research, responding to questions relating to their own reasons for applying for training in clinical psychology and a written task.

Applicants are assessed by a panel of clinical program staff in the multi-station interview process. Applicants will be ranked according to their performance at each station and those ranked highly enough will be offered a place in the program.

Stage 3: The offer

First round offers will be made by mid-November to applicants who are ranked at a sufficiently high level. A waitlist of applicants will be retained as second and third round offers may be made as late as January. Unsuccessful applicants will be advised as soon as is practically possible.

Note: Applicants are not permitted to defer an offer. Should you be unable to accept an offer, you must re-apply for entry in the following intake.

Entry to the program is very competitive and requires a Bachelor's degree with at least 2A Honours in Psychology or equivalent, accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council. Applicants will also need to supply referee reports and a personal statement that details their past accomplishments, future plans, and interests in the graduate psychology program. Interviews will be offered to the best candidates. Students with overseas qualifications who are accepted into the course and who wish to seek registration in Australia after graduation should ensure that their undergraduate qualifications meet the requirements of the relevant psychology registration board for equivalence to a four-year Australian degree in Psychology with at least 2A Honours. Applications with qualifications obtained outside Australia must have a formal assessment completed by the Australian Psychological Society before submitting an application for study.
English Requirements

You must meet a minimum standard in English to study at Murdoch, which for most courses can be demonstrated by providing evidence that you have completed Year 11 and 12 in Australia at any level if you are a domestic student, or through either English proficiency tests, university preparation courses, English language courses, previous tertiary study or vocational education.

Other Requirements Graduate students must be registered from the start of their higher degree as a provisional psychologist. Within the first two weeks of commencing the course, the student must gain provisional registration with Psychology Board of Australia. As many agencies require all staff working with their clients or patients to have a police clearance, applicants are required to obtain a Federal police clearance (which will include WA clearance) and a separate Working with Children Check is required. The applicant meets the cost of these clearances. Please note that some organisations providing professional placements require students to provide full immunisation records. All applicants must be in a position to provide these records if required.

Psychology Courses overview

Psychology is the science of how humans think. It explores classic theories of thought and the design of studies to better understand the minds of individuals and groups. Study pathway

There are numerous study paths available to postgraduate psychology students, ranging from certificates to PhDs.

Psychology taken at the graduate certificate level is often quite specific, taking six months to complete if undergone full time. Courses like the Graduate Certificate in Coaching Psychology from the University of Sydney or Graduate Certificate of Behaviour Support Teaching from Macquarie University serve specific, practical purposes. This makes them ideal for anyone with specific psychology careers in mind.

The Graduate Diploma in Psychology takes a year to complete if engaged with full time, or two years if taken part time. They often require an undergraduate degree in psychology to begin, in addition to a sound academic record (credit average). Institutions like Deakin University offer courses with these requirements that allow graduates to become registered provisional psychologists.

Master level psychology degrees tend to focus on coursework and improved qualifications, but in some circumstances a research master degree can be taken. RMIT offer this option to students wishing to make contributions to the field, whereas institutions like Bond University allow students to take the clinical route and become professionals. No matter the path, these programs tend to take two years if undergone full time.

PhD level psychology courses are available at institutions like James Cook University, allowing graduate students to hone their knowledge of the field. These degrees tend to take four years if undergone full time and are for those seeking extensive specialist knowledge and furthering their field.
