About this course

If your ambition is to make a positive difference to the lives of children and adolescents, then this is the program for you. The Master of Teaching (School Counselling) qualifies you to become a school counsellor as well as a qualified teacher in one area of the secondary school curriculum.

You will gain hands-on experience with 40 days of teaching practice in schools in two blocks, a school counselling professional experience in year one, a 25-day internship in school counselling in year two and a small-scale applied psychology research project. This experience will ensure you develop the confidence, knowledge and skills to become a successful school counsellor working across early childhood, primary, secondary and special schools.

In New South Wales, school counsellors are qualified teachers who also have postgraduate qualifications in psychology sufficient for eligibility for registration with the Psychology Board of Australia.

This course is designed to prepare students to become school counsellors, whilst also qualifying as a teacher in one area of the secondary-school curriculum. To this end, all candidates undertake coursework and professional experiences in school counselling and one of the curriculum areas listed on the prerequisites page.
