Professional accreditation

As a graduate, you are eligible to apply for registration as a teacher through the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT). This degree meets the expectations and requirements of the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL).

Entry requirements

Entry requirements
  • Completed a 3-year bachelor degree, or equivalent, in a discipline other than education with a minimum GPA of 4.0 out of 7.0.
  • Applicants for the Primary specialisation must demonstrate through eight units of their undergraduate degree, or other equivalent studies, adequate knowledge of one or more learning areas related to the Australian primary school curriculum. These areas are English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, the Arts, Health and Physical Education, Languages, and Technology. This requirement for discipline studies can be met through further study that is completed from different courses at bachelor degree level or higher.
  • While not a requirement for admission, students need to pass the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) prior to the final supervised professional experience placement and to graduate from this degree. Students can register for the LANTITE through the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). If an applicant has achieved a 'satisfactory' result for one or more components of the LANTITE at another institution, the 'satisfactory' result can be carried across with this admission application.

Non-academic entry requirements

  • Complete a questionnaire and provide written statements to address the key competencies of effective teachers. The criteria for selection includes capabilities such as motivation to teach, suitability for the teaching profession, learning activities and leadership responsibilities. Refer to the selection guidelines for initial teacher education courses.
English language requirements

Applicants from a non-English speaking background are required to satisfy the applicable English language requirements and this degree requires a minimum of IELTS 7.5, or equivalent, with a minimum of 8.0 in speaking and listening and 7.0 in all other subtests. If you do not meet the English language requirements you may apply to study a University-approved English language program.

Recognition of prior learning

Recognition of prior learning will help you reduce the number of courses that you need to study to finish your program. You may be eligible for up to eight units of credit/recognition of prior learning if you have completed a relevant, equivalent postgraduate level study from a recognised university or institution.

  • As a graduate, you are eligible for teacher registration. This presents many exciting opportunities for finding employment as a teacher for a wide variety of diverse contexts including metropolitan, rural and remote and international schools.
  • Want the skills you acquire training to be a teacher but not necessarily keen to be in the classroom? Teaching-related skills of communication and educational management are also in demand in careers such as sport and leisure centre management, personal training, life coaching and other professions in the human services.

Professional experience / Education placements

You will also need to complete 60 days of supervised professional experience. This experience provides you with the opportunity to put theory into practice and to build significant industry connections.

All students must be able to meet professional requirements expected of teachers within this degree, including holding a current Positive Exemption Card (Blue Card or Exemption Card), or equivalent.
