This program is designed specifically for registered nurses who want to learn more about the care and management of people with ophthalmic disorders. The University of Notre Dame Australia has collaborated with Sydney Hospital and the Sydney Eye Hospital to design this degree that will develop your knowledge and skills so that you can provide specialised care to people with ocular problems.

Entry requirements

Applicants to the course are required to have a:

  • Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Bachelor of Nursing (or equivalent)

What you will learn

The human eye is a complex and fascinating organ. As an ophthalmic nurse, you will be qualified to treat people with a wide range of ocular problems. The program covers every aspect of ophthalmic nursing, including the physiology of the eye, diseases that affect the eye, clinical management and the complexities of managing people with co-morbidities such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

On completion of the program, you will be equipped to conduct advanced clinical assessments, interpret clinical data and make sound clinical judgements about patient care. In addition, you will also develop your capacity for leadership, learn to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team and have developed problem solving and clinical reasoning within the context of ophthalmic nursing.

The Graduate Certificate in Ophthalmic Nursing has been developed and taught in conjunction with experts from the Sydney Hospital and Sydney Eye Hospital. This program is the only Graduate Certificate in Ophthalmic Nursing in Australia. The School of Nursing (Sydney) offers students a supported learning experience where they will interact with staff committed to nursing and the provision of excellent nursing care. The partnership with the Sydney Hospital and Sydney Eye Hospital means that students will access experts in the field of ophthalmology.
