The NSW Department of Education offers scholarships for students entering or continuing undergraduate or approved postgraduate Teacher Education degrees in NSW or ACT tertiary institutions – 80 of these will be offered to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in primary teaching or secondary teaching (any subject area). Relevant undergraduate degrees include Bachelor of Education or double degree in teacher education; relevant postgraduate degrees include initial postgrad teacher education programs such as Graduate Diploma in Education, graduate entry Bachelor of Teaching or Master of Teaching. The Scholarship covers training allowance of up to $5,000 per year based on full course load of 8 units per year, plus other benefits; scholarships can be for up to 5 years in length. After graduation teaching students can also be eligible for HECS-HELP benefit and on appointment to a NSW public school a grant of $3,000 is paid to assist with costs such as relocation.
