The Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages develops specialised skills and knowledge for professional practice in teaching. This course is designed to provide graduates with a comprehensive grounding in the theory and practice of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

Two streams are available in the Master of TESOL, and the four core units in each stream also form an embedded graduate certificate, differentiated as follows:Stream A For students with an existing teaching qualification for primary or secondary teaching in Australia (or an overseas teaching qualification recognised in Australia for purposes of registration), who wish to work as a TESOL specialist in any sector, including adult, in Australia or overseas. *Stream A applies only to candidates eligible for teacher registration in Australia)

Stream B For students who are not eligible for teacher registration in Australia (primary or secondary); Stream B students may already be working in the adult TESOL sector in Australia, or may be working or wish to seek employment overseas.

Admission to study postgraduate coursework at Deakin is based on recognition of your professional experience and previous qualifications.

Admission is based on:

  • Bachelor degree in Education or
  • Bachelor degree with a major sequence in the field of Education, whether or not it is an initial teacher qualification or
  • Bachelor degree in a related discipline in language studies, including linguistics, English language studies, or translation.

This course is designed to provide the skills and knowledge for professional practice in the field of teaching English to speakers of other languages. Students with an existing registration for primary or secondary teaching in Australia can gain professional recognition for TESOL as a specialist teaching method area. The course also provides professional development for teaching English to speakers of other languages in adult education contexts and for teaching English overseas.

Course structure

The Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages is typically 12 credit points.

The exact number of credit points you study depends on how much credit you receive as recognition of prior learning (RPL) - your professional experience and previous qualifications - which can save you time and money

To be awarded a Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, students are required to successfully complete the following:

  • 4 credit points from Stream A

Or

  • 4 credit points from Stream B

Plus

  • 8 credit points of study as a combination of research and elective units in 1 of the following configurations:

Option 1:

  • 2 credit points of research units (EDX701 and EDX707) and
  • 6 credit points of electives

Option 2:

  • 4 credit points of research units (EDX701, EDX712, EDX703, EDX704) and
  • 4 credit points of electives

Option 3:

  • 6 credit points of research units (EDX701, EDX712, EDX705 (2cps), EDX706 (2cps)) and
  • 2 credit points of electives

Credit for prior study or work

The University aims to provide students with as much credit as possible for approved prior study or informal learning which exceeds the normal entrance requirements for the course and is within the constraints of the course regulations. Students are required to complete a minimum of one-third of the course at Deakin University, or four credit points, whichever is the greater. In the case of certificates, including graduate certificates, a minimum of two credit points within the course must be completed at Deakin.
